CrossCompute Platform Updates

  • Launch your own private server of our CrossCompute Platform + Power Manager Kit (Electric Distribution Outage Statistics for Operations Managers).
  • Passkeys replace passwords. Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC) are used when supported by your browser.
  • Grant users access to specific tools on your private server by setting privileges and adding IP addresses to the firewall.
  • Run tools in different projects to isolate datasets.
  • Get better error messages when importing datasets in the Power Manager Kit.

Launch Private Platform + Power Manager Kit

After many months of work, we have finally deployed our Launch Platform tool.

You can now launch your own private server of our CrossCompute Platform, pre-configured with our Power Manager Kit (Electric Distribution Outage Statistics for Operations Managers).

  • Your private server will only be accessible from pre-specified IP addresses.
  • The processes within the server are restricted from network egress.

Please note that it takes approximately ten minutes for this tool to run from start to finish, after which it will provide a link to your new server.

Access is currently restricted. Here are instructions for requesting access:

  1. Register as a New User on https://crosscompute.com/users/registration
  2. Get your User Slug from Index > Users
  3. Email support+platform@crosscompute.com with your User Slug

Passkey Only Authentication

Passwords have been removed entirely and replaced with passkeys. For maximum security, please use hardware passkeys, though cloud-based passkeys work well too.

Authentication will use Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC) when supported by your browser. At this time, Google Chrome is the only browser that supports this recommended security feature.

Granular Access Control + Firewall Configuration

When you first access your private server, you will need to Register as a New User.

  1. Click “Sign In”
  2. Click “Register as a New User”

As the first user, you will have super user privileges:

  • site VIEW every user, project, tool, result
  • site RUN every tool
  • site FIX tool settings, upgrade existing tools or upload new tools
  • site GRANT privileges to other users; e.g., grant User2 the ability to run Tool7

Subsequent users (any user that registers after the first user) start with zero privileges. Users who have site GRANT access can grant privileges on the Users page.

  1. Click “Index”
  2. Click “Users”

Each privilege is granular, which means that if a Tool has PROTECTED visibility, then a user must have explicit VIEW access to the specific tool or project containing that tool.

  • PUBLIC tools and results are accessible by everyone.
  • HIDDEN tools and results are also accessible by everyone but not publicly listed.
  • PROTECTED tools and results require explicit privileges for that specific tool or result.
  • PRIVATE tools and results are only accessible by its owner.

There are two kinds of access:

  • VIEWABILITY is the ability to view a project, tool or result.
  • RUNNABILITY is the ability to run a tool.

From time to time, it may be useful to isolate datasets by running tools in different projects. For example, you might want to calculate outage statistics for different regions. Project level privileges are similar to site level privilges:

  • project VIEW project users, tools, results
  • project RUN project tools
  • project GRANT privileges to other users; e.g. grant User3 VIEW access to the project

Finally, you can add additional IP addresses that can access your private server:

  1. Click “Index”
  2. Click “Settings”

We upgraded the Import Datasets tool to be better at communicating errors and warnings when processing your uploaded data.

  1. Make Example Datasets 0.3.1: See what data is needed to generate the report.
  2. Import Datasets 0.2.0.2: Import your datasets.
  3. Compute Statistics 0.3.1.2: Crunch the data.
  4. See Report 0.3.0.2: Download your report.
